In response to the challenges posed by russia's destructive invasion, Ukraine has accelerated its European integration process and committed itself to green recovery, including the decarbonisation of the construction sector. This involves reducing both operational carbon emissions from energy supply and heating of buildings, as well as embodied carbon emissions - i.e. emissions associated with the production of materials, transportation, construction, maintenance and dismantling of buildings.
Given the importance of embodied carbon, it is crucial to use building materials made of Ukrainian wood in the reconstruction process, as their production is associated with much lower CO2 emissions than other materials such as steel and cement. In addition, wood can capture and store significant amounts of carbon in the form of building structures for a long period of time.

The Role of Wood Construction in Ukraine’s Recovery: Overview of Strategies and Initiatives
FSC Ukraine launched an independent expert study on the potential contribution of wood construction to the green recovery of Ukraine. The report ‘The Role of Wood Construction in Ukraine's Recovery: Overview of Strategies and Initiatives’ provides an analysis of the positions of the Ukrainian government, the European Union, international financial institutions and civil society on the use of wood in reconstruction projects. The analysis highlights the current barriers and potential opportunities for expanding the use of wood in view of its potential benefits in view of its value in the decarbonisation of the construction sector.
